Palm Baskets from Mexico
Dried palm weaving is one of the most common forms of art and of living for many women and older men in Mexico, it is actually very common to walk by the street and see women sitting down against a wall weaving hats or baskets without even looking down at what their doing, it’s like their fingers already know what to do by heart.
Most of the women know how to weave palms wether they learned form their fathers or grandfathers because it is tradition to pass it on from father to daughter. So women have been taught to go out to the mountain, to cut the palms, to dry them and to cut it so its manageable to weave and of course are instructed on the many weaving techniques.
One of the main regions where this is practiced is in Zapotitlan and Huajuapan which is also where palms are the most abundant allowing artisans to work freely without worrying about costs or competition. For many in the region it is the only way they can survive, it’s the only way they can make a living. Prices for palms have gone up incredibly high in many regions and it is very difficult for artisans to make enough money to provide for their children which is why it is very important to Nomads Venture to pay what is fair for their work, to pay the real value of their actual labor. So let me thank you for your purchase on behalf of all of our artisans, because you have contributed to the many families that make a living off of palm weaving.
= Fair Trade =
Fair trade >> is an organized social movement whose stated goal is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainability. Members of the movement advocate the payment of higher prices to exporters, as well as higher social and environmental standards. The movement focuses in particular on commodities, or products which are typically exported from developing countries to developed countries, but also consumed in domestic markets most.
The movement seeks to promote greater equity in international trading partnerships through dialogue, transparency and respect. It promotes sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers in developing countries.
All of our items are fair trade products, we pride ourselves in knowing that all of our partner artisans are being payed what they truly should be and hence we are helping each and every artisan family to provide for their children.
