You will want to put that phone down after you watch this!!

If you guys have not seen “HER” the movie with Joaquin Phoenix, it’s a must so you can understand how social media is affecting all of us. The movie is about this guy that falls in love with his operating system and the rest of the movie emphasizes on how people are not communicating at all, there’s a scene in particular that got to me where everyone is walking down the street talking on their earphones and not even looking around and it’s so true.. I am not saying I am not into social media, I mean I have this blog who am I kidding, I am no hypocrite. But I think it all should be in moderation, sure go on instagram if you are sitting at home, or by yourself, write on your blog, connect with friends on facebook but do it while you are not with other friends, or while you are not outdoors.

I was dating this guy who would always and I mean always have his phone out, he would deny it but it’s true! We would go out to dinner and he would be eating with his head down scrolling on facebook with his finger; we took a roadtrip to palm springs once and he was on the phone most of the time.  I would tell him: “hey look at the mountains!” look at the windmills, look at this look at that and every time I turned around he would be on his phone, too busy to even look up. If I’m with friends at home I don’t even answer phone calls sometimes, I don’t even take my phone out of my bag when I go out,  I completely surrender my phone. I have to admit that yes,  when I am with my roommate or my best friend or my partner who I hang out with all the time then yes, of course I grab my phone and catch an update on social media but we are listening to each other, joking around, commenting about stuff we see on Facebook or Instagram I am not closed out to conversation I am having with others on whats app or looking at pics. I think whats app is an amazing tool for example but being on the app all day is basically giving a priority to people that are not present with you and ignoring the ones who are, it’s like saying you are not as important as this other person on my phone so excuse me. I find it incredibly rude when someone is trying to talk to you and the other person is just too busy to leave his phone down. I think its important not to confuse the true purpose of social media, use it to your advantage don’t make it a disadvantage; don’t miss out on nature, on receiving or giving a smile out on the street, on reading a good book instead of scrolling on you phone, on talking to the stranger sitting next to you ..

I came upon this video on the web today which is what made me write this post in the first place.. Just watch, you will realize you are doing most of these things, you will realize you say you are not obsessed with social media but really you are. So leave your phones doowwwwn!! Enjoy your day, enjoy staring at someone’s eyes when talking! :)
